I am Peg Bowden, and I live 12 miles from the Mexican border in Arizona. After retiring from a career as a public health nurse, I was very much finished with health care. However the immigration crisis so close to my home plunged me into the murky, confusing and confounding world of the migrant. Presently I volunteer at a shelter called "el comedor" in Nogales, Mexico. This blog is the story of the people I meet each week.
I am active in two organizations that support the immigration issue in very different ways:
The Green Valley Samaritans are up front and personal and very hands on. They provide food, water, medical aid and clothing to migrants both in the Sonoran desert in the U.S., and in Nogales, Mexico. Their website is: www.gvs-samaritans.org
I am a past Board member of the Border Community Alliance, an organization that focuses on the cultural, economic and humanitarian issues of the Arizona borderlands. Contact Jerry Haas at jndhaas@gmail.com for more information. The website is:
